I think I have to share a advice from a leader which I met.
It’s night already when I met this person. But he taught me a very important leadership subject. A leader as a coach.
Him: “Cun, did you know how to lead people?”
Him: “I’ll tell you my story about a leader at church”
Him : “Well…. Cun, I think you already saw someone leading others at a company right? Do you think how they lead? You must already heard a story of leader tried to get his command executed by threatening his subordinates”
Him : “Let me give you example what about these words?”
Him : “‘If you aren’t doing my command then I will downing your score at appraisal or fire/demote you’ ”
Him : “You must have heard some stories of those words right?”
Him : “Now think if you are assigned as a leader of a task at church”
Him : “How you manage people?”
Him : “By money? No some peoples are richer than you”
Him : “By power? No some peoples have more influence than you”
Him : “By strength? No some peoples could fight better than you”
Him : “So how you could lead them when you couldn’t threaten them?”
Him : “There is something that makes them want to be lead by you. It’s certainly neither power nor money, you may not threat them”
Him : “Cun, did you get my words? Now remember how I lead my subordinate. Did I ever threatening my subordinates?”
Him : “I lead my subordinates here just as the same way I LEAD THOSE PEOPLE AT CHURCH”
Him : “and I avoid using either power or money”
And then that night I realized his style of leadership indeed a good leadership style. Demonstrate to me how to built trust. His subordinates work with a WILLING OBEDIENCE rather than FORCED OBEDIENCE therefore have a good teamwork culture. His subordinates realized that their leader acts like a “father” for them, willing to put himself in front when danger comes and when subordinates make a mistake, he treat a mistake as a learning rather than punishment.
